Public Service

Nice job by Ann Pierceall to inform us in her column that those red boxes around town are not affiliated with any charity and have no local connection. I had a sneaky feeling about those things. If you want to help local people, the Bucket Blitz for the Salvation Army is coming up soon.

I've put off responding to this since the day that you posted, but now I've got the time and motivation. I get tired of my clothes and throw away a handful of clothes seasonally. The problem is many of the charitable organizations will only take clothes that are in season. Well, I'm still wearing the clothes that are in season and am ready to get rid of the clothes that are no longer in season. So, my options are to hold onto the clothes until they are in season, which I really have no interest in, throwing them away in the garbage, which seems a waste, or taking them to one of these out-of-town dumpsters. It seems to me that the local charitable organizations should be happy to take whatever donations they receive, whenever they receive them. My clothes, especially, are hardly worn and are in very good condition, but right now I have a bunch of short-sleeved shirts that no one wants. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Really! I didn't know that.

I've never had anything rejected by the Salvation Army, so this information comes as a surprise to me. I've never stopped to think whether the clothes I've donated were in season or not, though....maybe they have always been "in season." Not really sure.

My wife, who is my "disposer" says that if Salvation Army is flush with clothes at the moment they will refuse your donated clothes. She says that if you just drop it off without telling them what you have, then you're good to go. She also says that Catholic Charities will refuse out of season clothes and Quanada will refuse men's clothes. I also know that thrift shops will not buy out of season.

We've had poor results with local charities as well. We tried to donate a lot of clothes before - good clothes, in very good shape. One local group insisted that the clothes be folded. They were newly laundered, just not folded. Then they took the folded clothes and unfolded them to check for problems, and ended up putting them on hangers for storage. Not exactly making it convenient to donate.

In another case, we tried to donate a refrigerator. Nothing fancy, but a working fridge. We had bought a house and bought a new one, and wanted to donate the old one. Noone would take it because it "wasn't new".
