Whatever the city has been doing to "help" downtown businesses, it needs to stop it immediately and do the opposite. Because they're closing faster than a storm door in a gust of wind.
You know, I enjoy driving thru downtown without stoplights. The four-way stop signs seem to work fine for the amount of traffic passing thru each intersection. The need for electric stop lights goes back to the time when Maine Street was US 24 and all traffic across Memorial bridge was channeled on Maine Street. Do we really need stop lights in the Maine Street business district?
I've had terrible luck with the stop signs. In the two times I've been down Maine Street during construction, I barely missed two accidents with idiots who can't read stop signs. Then again, one was pretty engaged in a cell phone conversation and it was rude of me to get in her way.

One at 8th, and maybe at 5th because of Washington Park. 7th is already stop signs on the side streets, so why not at 6th too?
There's at least as much traffic between 8th and 12th as between 4th and 8th, and we don't have stoplights every block in that stretch.
