Lessons in Logic

"The Economic Development Loan Program was established in 1984 with the aim of promoting the Quincy area’s economy by providing financial incentives that encourage private investments for new and expanding businesses. One goal is that loans result in the creation and/or retention of jobs."

Therefore, the Oakley-Lindsay Center qualifies for a loan under these terms because it's......

a. a new business
b. an expanding business
c. a private entity
d. NONE OF THE ABOVE

I agree with Rob that they need to fix the acoustics in the hall to bring in more events, not just concerts are affected by bad acoustics. They also need to make the long needed roof repairs but I think they are going after the wrong pool of money to get it done.

Let's see. The OLC wants taxpayer money to attract meetings and entertainments that compete with privately owned facilities. If I owned those facilities I would not be too keen to see my tax money used for the OLC. The caged fights certainly reflect in a somewhat less than favorable way on our taxpayer funded OLC.

If they can't make it what they are taking in now, then sell it. We taxpayers are tired of supporting losing propositions. This has been a white elephant from the beginning. Maybe they can talk JWCC in to buying it. They seem to have unlimited funs for about anything thing. Then again, maybe the QPD caould aquire it with one of their many grants. Just some random thoughts.

Nearly all of those "private facilities" got started AFTER the OLC was built so I don't buy the notion that somehow they are being deprived because the OLC exists.

And if ANY of those (including the OLC) are any good at what they do, the competition shouldn't even be an issue.

The caged fights are popular. They make good money for the so-called "white elephant". And there are a lot of good people who enjoy the event. Or dew yew thank dem peepul iz ignerent an' reflk bad on Kwinsee cuz dey lahk fittin'?

Please, explain (if you can) why you think the caged fights "reflect in a...less than favorable way". They're no worse than the publically funded lunacy of the presidential campaign, except they make no pretense of being polite.

The OLC covers all its expenses. They even make a small profit. But not enough to cover the major improvements that are now going to come up.

I agree with the first poster: they're going after the wrong pool of money. But you do know they can't just go out and get a loan like you or I could. They have to have city permission and backing.

Oh my. Caged fights are popular. Then they absolutely must continue at the OLC. But wait. There were other popular activities in the past.

Christians were thrown to the lions in ancient Rome. French peasants cheered wildly as people were guillotined with and without a trial. Families packed picnic lunches to attend public hangings in 19th century America. Crowds gathered to encourage metal barbs be added to the end of the straps when slaves were publicly whipped in Southern and Border states. Germans watched and cheered as Nazis burned Jewish homes and stores in the years leading up to WWII.

Most civilized people would condemn these "popular" activities from the past. In the not too distant future, and hopefully sooner, we will come to realize that encouraging the pain and suffering of another human being is an "entertainment" we can live without. Especially one that takes place in a publicly funded facility which indicates it has at least the tacit support of the community's citizens.

Is Mayor Spring going to run off the cage fighters like he did the skydivers because Quincy is this bastion of moral purity?

Give me a freaking break.

Like or dislike Mayor Spring, he WASN'T Mayor when the skydivers chose to leave because they didn't want to obey city laws.

Yeesh, two major factual errors in one paragraph. Try to whittle that down to one.

4:05am, NICE straw man argument, except the caged fights are in no way comparable to ANY of the incidents you cited, which all involved people UNWILLINGLY thrust into those situations--and killed too.

I see you are one of those very Nazis (you brought 'em up my friend) who want to dictate to the rest of us what constitutes "proper" and "right" activities for our leisure time.

I am not normally given to swearing (except when the damned cat craps on the floor AGAIN) but as politely as I can: stay the F*#K out of my entertainment choices. They're none of your damned business.

Oh wait, I think caged fights are stupid and wouldn't waste my money on them. Oh yeah, that's right, I believe in civil rights and that people should have a right to choose where they spend their entertainment dollars without some snot-nosed lib OR conservative telling him what is "appropriate".

By the way I know lots of people think my enjoyment of classical music is stupid. Most of them are kind enough to let me make my own choice though.
