The Hype-O-Meter Begins to Smoke

This month's Arts/Quincy tells us that the bank building at Seventh and Hampshire is "perhaps one of the finest examples of Modernism found anywhere in the world."

Perhaps it's a Colobus monkey, too, but both statements are equally ridiculous.

OK, I know it's not Arts/Quincy saying that, it's the press release from the Gardner Museum. But good lord, it's a shameless bunch of hype.

Think I'll drive out to the "bold futuristic masterpiece" that is the Quincy Regional Airport and have some kraut & sausage on Thursday nights.

First Bank? That's the ugliest damned building in town. St. Boniface School is nicer than First Bank, and that's not saying much! Heck that stretch of 7th Street has three eyesores: St. Boniface Church (concrete spirituality?), their school, and First Bank.

Give me traditional loveliness such as the NEXT block, St. John's Episcopal Church.

True, I would say that the Bank of America building at 24th and Broadway is uglier.

Business Center or that yellow and red pay day loan formerly the liquor depot on 18th and Broadway, both are alot more uglier than any bank in town, except maybe that one on 12th and Jefferson.

Actually, I went down to 7th and Hampshire yesterday to take a look. I spent about 15 minutes viewing it from various angles. It's a nice design, but definitely not one of the finest examples of Modernism to be found anywhere in the world. I didn't care for the hanging fixtures; they are too much like the little balls on a bolero hat. The concrete has not aged well; it's discolored rather badly, which is also a problem with the Bank of America building, which I still contend is actually ugly.

11:29 has it right, though; the old Liquor Depot at 18th and Broadway is way uglier.

The Bank of America building takes the word "facade" to a whole new level...it literally looks like it's a shell stuck on a plain brick building.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the new Maya restaurant out near 48th on Broadway. That's gotta violate some city ordinance somewhere.

Wait...you guys are talking about the other Bank of America building. I mean the one downtown.

I don't mind the Maya half as much as the Panera Bread front that got slapped onto the strip of stores by Hy-Vee. That one is just silly--you can almost hear it trying to say, "Sally Beauty Supply is boring, but not us! We're cool and trendy! We don't use right angles!"

Nice to know the little elite people in Quincy who don't like anything new or different are still alive and well. That kind of thinking is exactly why Quincy fails to grow as it should. Downtown Quincy is growing so rapidly. Benya was trying to jump start the downtown area when he designed Gem City Savings & Loan but old money and old minds didn't like change. No follow up. So now you have the results. Very few people willing to invest in the downtown area. Little minds..........what buildings do you own? How many have you built in Quincy? How many payroll checks do you write each week? Little snobby elitist squirel dicks deciding which buildings you like or don't like. Buy something with your own money, tear it down and build something you like. Then we'll see if we like it.....
Good OLD Quincy still struggling with the commerence police...
