One's a noun, one's an adjective

Democrat. Democratic.

So when the editorial in the Herald-Whig says "Democrat candidate" or "Democrat proposal," etc., etc., it's just being ungrammatical. Doug Wilson does that in his column as well.

Grammatical errors are a blight and a sin.

Democrat = political party
Democratic = system of government

Different words, different context.

CORRECT

If I am a Democrat, I will cast an all Democrat ballot today when I vote for all Democrats.

If I am a Republican, I will cast an all Republican ballot today when I vote for all Republicans.

-or-

INCORRECT

If I am a Democrat, I will cast an all Democratic ballot today when I vote for all Democrats.

If I am a Republican, I will cast an all Republicanatic ballot today when I vote for all Republicans.

But in all reality, I will probably vote for a couple of Republicans and a few Democratics.

It gets a little twisty for two reasons. First, the Illinois Statutes tend not to use the same word for the Democrat party, sometimes saying "democratic". Ditto for the SBE references.

Additonally, from a journalist's perspective, I suppose they want to see the party name used uniformly. Well, "republican" is an adjective and a noun, so, even-handed treatment means a grammatic strain.

The Democrat Party may occasionally be "democratic" but that is just serendipity.

I love this topic, Thanks.

Sorry to all for being a grammar prig. But doggone it, everywhere I look I see grammatical errors. You know what I really hate? I hate the NPR reporters who say things like, "The agency, which includes both farmers and suburbanites, have found their solution in a compromise." I'm driving down the road shouting "has found its! Has found its!" when I realize that people think I'm one of those angry-road-rage types. They do it all the time, too! Ah well. Time for my medicine.

All....

General Motors is "rolling out THEIR new, smaller SUV...." No, No! Does anybody have a knitting needle I can jam through my retina?

"We want everyone to get THEIR opportunity for a flu shot" Oh, never mind...where do I go to sign up for lethal injection beta testing?
