Random notes

Nothing significant to comment on in local media lately....just a few observations.....

The Whig needs to cut off the smoking debate in the letters column. Nothing but acrimony and repetition for weeks now.

"Rushmore of Rock" disappeared without a trace. If the H-W is going to try something interactive, it needs to follow through.

Nothing the Whig likes better than a new big-money building project. This time it's $34 million for the port terminal. Who exactly stands to profit from this enterprise? And not just "the public will benefit"......but who are the investors in this thing? And why should the various branches of government pitch in to help them make money? Last time I checked, ADM stock was at a new high. So maybe if they need a new terminal they should built it themselves.

Compliment time

Terrific story on the year's anniversary of the Monroe City tornado.

Plus a very nice piece on dealing with epilepsy.

Although this article in the latest Columbia Journalism Review makes me pause and try to remember......

Blessing Hospital is the largest employer in Quincy. When is the last time that any of the local news media published anything critical about it.....not in the sense of "criticizing," but simply in the sense of "close, objective examination"? The local media, and especially the H-W, do a great job of service reporting in the field of health, but I'm not sure whether anybody is reporting about the institutional structure and impact of local health organizations.

Rushmore of Rock

Nice idea. It's good to see the Whig try to get a little more interactive. Typically the only public-involvement side you see in the Whig is the battery of crackpots who write letters to the editor.

But Rod Stewart? Gimme a break.
